A foreign diploma in Algeria
Equivalence in Algeria is issued by the MESRS.
If you come home with a diploma earned abroad and you want to enrol, sit a competitive exam or work in Algeria, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is what grants the equivalence, through its Sous-direction des equivalences. Here is what the official procedure asks for.
The four steps of the procedure
Authentication in the issuing country
The university or authority that issued the diploma authenticates it, then the Algerian diplomatic representation in that country validates it. Without that double authentication the file does not move.
Sworn translation where needed
If the documents are not in a national language, they need a translation by a sworn translator, endorsed by the Algerian consular authorities.
Filing online
Filing is online only. You request an access account on the MESRS site, then submit the file on the platform. There is no physical deposit at the ministry any more.
Review and attestation
The Sous-direction des equivalences reviews the diploma and the transcript, then issues the attestation of equivalence and the grade correspondence document. The MESRS publishes no processing time, so plan generously.
The documents, by level
The list changes with the level and the field, and medical science diplomas have their own. Always check the current list on the platform before you file.
- Licence or bachelor
- Information sheet, authenticated copy of the baccalaureate or its recognised equivalent, authenticated copy of the graduation diploma, authenticated transcript, sworn translation where needed, passport copy, birth certificate extract, consular card copy and residence permit covering the study period.
- Master
- Everything in the licence list, plus the authenticated licence or bachelor diploma, the authenticated master diploma, the transcript, and all submitted work: the dissertation and its CD.
- Doctorate
- Authenticated copies of the baccalaureate, the graduation diploma, the postgraduate diploma and the doctorate itself, plus all submitted work: the thesis and its CD, with the same civil-status and residence documents.
The other direction: an Algerian diploma used abroad
For France, the ENIC-NARIC France centre, hosted by France Education international, issues an attestation de comparabilite. The application is online only, one diploma per application, and it passes an admissibility stage before assessment. Each institution still sets its own admission conditions, and the attestation is not always required.
For Canada there is no national equivalence. IRCC asks for an Educational Credential Assessment from a designated organisation: World Education Services, the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada, the Comparative Education Service at the University of Toronto, IQAS, or ICES at BCIT. Professional bodies handle architects, physicians and pharmacists. The assessment has to be less than five years old when you apply, or the application is refused.
